September 27, 2007:
Lost or Stolen?

Last week I was traveling through the Denver Airport - if you've ever been through there, you know that the line for security is quite long - no matter when you go - day or night, summer or winter. It doesn't seem to matter. You inch along in a line that reminds me of a ride at "Valley Fair", only the anticipation is not quite the same.

Of course, someone like Michelle, can't just inch along and be satisfied with the time alone with my thoughts. I have to make phone calls because soon I'll be on that big bird in the sky and that's plenty of time to siphon through my head - or sleep!! So, I'm on the phone with my customer Karl Beth, from United Coop in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. We are deep in conversation when I'm at the security belt and I need to hang up or I can't go through and I'm sure many people would start throwing their shoes at me if I held up this enormously long line any longer.

Right before I go through the scanner, all my stuff on the belt already, I shut off my phone and tell him I'll call him when I get through. Either the fixation on the call I needed to make once I got through, or the lady behind me commenting on how much she likes my shoes and where did I get them, etc, etc, but whatever it was, I forgot my laptop on the belt. I grab all my other stuff, putting on my belt and shoes, grabbing my phone and walking away, I see a sign above the escalator that says, "GOT LAPTOP?" I'm thinking, what kind of dumb idiot would forget their laptop, and off I walk thinking I'm so smart.

I arrived home in Minneapolis, open up my backpack and find no laptop. I take myself backwards in time and realize it must be at the Denver Airport. I swallow my arrogance from when I called all the other people idiots (atleast in my head) and told the person on the phone that I left it on the belt - even though I saw the sign. He said, "Hold on ma'am (when did I become ma'am, by the way....I feel so old!) and I'll find out if it's still there." A few minutes later, "Yep, It's here. Call back tomorrow and we'll get your information and send it out."

I was very relieved and went on with the rest of my day. The next day I called back to the airport. This time a different person at lost and found said, "Nope, it's not here. There is no HP laptop. We have 3 Dells and one Panasonic, but no HPs." So round and round we go - me telling him they had it yesterday and him telling me they don't. After three days of this, they determine that it's stolen and I must file a police report with the Denver Police because the Denver Airport people don't have security cameras that they can use - only the police have them at their airport.

Anyway, the moral of this story is really just "Make sure you grab your stuff, cuz from many miles away, it's really hard to find it again!!" or it could be "Don't call others idiot, even if it's in your own head, because if a day goes by where you don't make a mistake, then you are perfect and people will then expect perfection."

Keep smiling!
Michelle
