April 05 , 2007:
Win or Lose - that IS the question...

Have you ever won money? I don't necessarily mean a huge pile of dough - but even small amounts that you didn't expect. This past December, I attended the National Grain and Feed Show in St. Louis, Missouri. This bank had a booth at the trade show and they had a money wind machine. They drew names and that person got to spend 2 minutes in this wind machine that blew money around and the person got to grab it.

Low and behold they called my name. I personally thought it was rigged and that they had called my name because the ratio of men to women at the NGFA meeting is about 200 to 1. And I was one of the only women in a skirt so I thought they just wanted to see how the skirt would handle the wind. I tricked them though and put on jeans right before they called the name!! HA!

Win or Lose Picture

Anyway, so I went into the machine, they turned on the wind and I ended up with $78 in my pocket. Now, the big decision - What to do with all my money?

So I decided - "This is like FREE money. So I'm going to carry it with me until I find a person who is working really hard at their job and doesn't expect something for it." (And the person could not be in my own company....) "When I find this person, I'm going to give them the $78."

I carried it with me for about 2 months, always paying attention to people and how they treat their customers. I watched taxi drivers, waitresses, Dr.'s, the guy that removes the snow, checkout at the grocery store...all kinds of people. I was searching for that person who was going above and beyond.

Finally I went to a Minnesota Wild hockey game. The "beer delivery guy" was going up and down the stairs of the stands. Carrying two cases of beer and snacks. Sweating to beat the band. This guy in front of me held up a $5 and said, "I'll take a beer." The BDG (beer delivery guy) handed him a beer, took his $5 and went to get change. The beer was $4.50. I thought the guy would say, "Keep it." But noooooo. He waited and took back the 50 cents.

So, I thought about my $78 - this guy was working so hard. I went up the stairs and found him leaning on a post resting. I said, "Do you get to keep all your tips?" He looked at me like I was a crazy woman, but he said, "Yes". I handed him the $78 in a roll and told him I thought he was doing a great job. I walked away.

So the question today is, "Did I win or lose"?

Keep Smiling - and Happy Easter!
Michelle
