January 15, 2008:
Nine Lives

My life has been full of many stories, but there are three that, whenever I tell them, seem to leave people standing with their faces stuck with that “huh?” look.  So I thought I would start out 2008 by telling you those three stories, and I hope, over the next few months you enjoy them and send me back stories of your own.

Do you think that we, as humans, and not felines, have nine lives?  I think we may.  And I believe I have 5 left.  Three of the stories of the lives I’ve used up, I’d like to share with you and the fourth one, I’m just chalking up to “growing up with 7 brothers”.  I figure I’ve had many “close calls” as a child, but can’t really remember because as a kid, if we didn’t die, we didn’t care, so I’m just giving up one of my lives for that cause – surviving childhood.

My first “near death experience” happened 10 years ago in Pine Bluff, Arkansas when I was laying Farmer Clip Artabout 500 ft. of computer cable in the ceiling of my customer, “The Farmers Coop”.  This place is about as far south in Arkansas as you can go, so, for a woman to march in there and ask “where’s the access to your attic?”  was quite something.  But they showed me where it was, and Billy Joe and Billy Bob helped me up.  From that point forward, I was known as “Ms. Michelle” (pronounced Mizzzzz Mushellllllllll).

The two guys tagged along - wherever I went, they came too - me draggin’ cable and both of them asking what they can do to help.  Southern hospitality is GREAT!  It was one of those ceilings where it’s false, so you can only walk on top of the walls or you would fall right through.  The three of us – myself and the Billy’s – were making quite a path in the insulation.

After about 2 hours of this routine, we were almost done.  The last cable had to be strung over a wall from one room to another.  And the room we were sending it into was full of all of the computer equipment we were going to move into place, once the cable running was completed.  I was squatted on top of the wall between the last two rooms, grabbing down to take the cable from one Billy (who had gone down below – most likely because it was like 140 degrees in the ceiling), and then running it over the wall and feeding it into the room with all the equipment.  (Billy Two did not descend from “Hell in the Sky” – he was a much more durable man than his counterpart).

As I handed it over, I lost my balance and fell backwards into the room with the equipment.  I must have “lost touch with the world” because I do not remember this plunge.  The next thing I remember is standing on the floor in a 2’ by 2’ space of the room – the only space not occupied with equipment.  Oh yea, I almost forgot, there were also two women in the room who were sitting there just screaming at the top of their lungs due to a woman who had just landed in their room, unannounced, from the Southern Skies.

Dancer Clip ArtBilly Two was looking down at me through the hole I had created with the most awestricken look on his face.  I was standing with a combination of ceiling tile and insulation draped over my body and I said to him, “What happened?  How did I land here?”  He said, “You fell backwards, did a back flip and landed on your feet – just like a cat.”  I put my hands up above my head like a gymnast and said, “Ta Da”.

From that point on, I was no longer known as Mizzzz Mushelllllllll.  For the next two days, every single person who came through the front door of the Farmers Coop in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, was brought back to meet me – the woman who fell out of the ceiling, did a back flip and landed on her feet – just like a cat!

Keep smiling and don’t forget to share your “near death experience”!  Check back soon for story #2.
